Sundays River Canoe Trail

Nukakamma Canoe Trail Expedition

Embark on an unforgettable journey along the Sundays River with the Nukakamma Canoe Trail Expedition, one of the most unique Addo Park activities and the only canoe trail in South Africa with official Green Flag Status. The name “Nukakamma,” meaning “grassy water,” was given by the Khoisan to describe the river’s lush green banks and abundant wildlife.

This self-guided Eastern Cape canoe adventure begins near Colchester, where you’ll paddle through tranquil waters surrounded by scenic views and thriving birdlife. Along the way, spot kudu, bushbuck, otters, and over 200 bird species that call this pristine ecosystem home.

After paddling 13km, you’ll reach a rustic overnight cabin nestled on the riverbank. Relax, swim, fish, or enjoy a traditional South African braai under the stars. With your gear transported for you, all that’s left is to unwind and soak in the peace of the Sundays River. The following morning, paddle back at your own pace, completing one of the most rewarding Colchester attractions for nature lovers and explorers alike.
